Nallatech Selected to Develop FPGA Architecture for Next Generation European Extremely Large Telescope

August 31st, 2010 – Nallatech, a leading supplier of high-performance Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) FPGA Architecture solutions for over eighteen years, has been selected by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) to investigate next generation system architectures that could be used on the instruments of the European Extremely Large Telescope (“E-ELT”) project: www.eso.org/sci/facilities/eelt/

The E-ELT will be a revolutionary new ground-based telescope aimed at tackling the biggest scientific challenges including tracking down Earth-like planets around other stars. FPGA Architecture will aid this new telescope to perform “stellar archaeology” in nearby galaxies, as well as make fundamental contributions to cosmology by measuring the properties of the first stars and galaxies and probing the nature of dark matter and dark energy.

In order to achieve these scientific breakthroughs, advanced sensor and computing technology and FPGA Architecture will be required to control the E-ELT Instruments’ complex adaptive optics in real-time. This involves low latency, high throughput Matrix Vector Multiplication (MVM) calculations. Nallatech’s role in the project is to assess the viability of various architectures and interconnects that utilise Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. A demonstration system using existing Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware and IP will be used to prove that the required levels of performance are first possible at all, and secondly, scalable.

Nallatech Completes First Customer Shipment of 10Gb Ethernet PCI Express FPGA Accelerator Card

Nallatech, a leading supplier of high-performance COTS FPGA solutions, today announced the first customer shipment of the PCIe-180 PCI Express FPGA Accelerator Card, a low profile PCI Express FPGA accelerator card featuring a 10Gb Ethernet interface directly coupled to a Xilinx FPGA. The PCIe-180 PCI Express FPGA Accelerator Card is the latest product to be introduced to Nallatech’s highly successful Embedded PCI Series of FPGA COTS solutions and is targeted at Signal Intelligence, Network Security and Algorithm Acceleration applications.

The PCIe-180 PCI Express FPGA Accelerator Card features an onboard Xilinx Virtex-5 user FPGA directly coupled to a high bandwidth, flexible memory configuration that includes ECC and parity protection. Five independent banks of DDR-II SRAM provide up to 10GBytes/sec of sustained, random access memory bandwidth. A single bank of DDR2 SDRAM memory provides 4GBytes/sec of deep storage local to the user FPGA. The PCIe-180 PCI Express FPGA Accelerator Card is tightly integrated to the Host platform via an 8-lane PCI Express connection supporting sustained bandwidths of up to 2.2GBytes/sec. Optimized VHDL memory controller IP cores and reference designs are included as part of the standard product deliverables along with driver and API source code for 64-bit Linux operating systems.

“The adoption of 10Gb Ethernet is well underway,” said Craig Petrie, Product Manager at Nallatech. “The increased bandwidths associated with 10GbE offer many benefits, but also present new challenges for customers trying to process and manage this torrent of data in real time. The PCIe-180 PCI Express FPGA Accelerator Card will allow customers to use the Xilinx FPGA and associated external memory as an effective, low power data-centric processing engine.“

The PCIe-180 PCI Express FPGA Accelerator Card is the only accelerator card of this class to comply with the “low profile” half height, half length PCI Express mechanical specification. The new DATA-V5 FPGA, memory and I/O module is compatible with Nallatech PCI Express  Platforms featuring COTS motherboards and is targeted at algorithm acceleration and signal intelligence applications. The DATA-V5 is the latest product to be introduced to Nallatech’s highly successful Embedded PCI Express Platorm Series of FPGA COTS solutions.

The onboard Xilinx Virtex-5 LX330T-2 user FPGA is directly coupled to multiple independent banks of DDR2 SDRAM and QDR-II SRAM memory providing up to 13GBytes/sec of sustained memory bandwidth to the FPGA. The module supports up to 1GByte of DDR2 SDRAM and 18MByte of QDR-II SRAM. Optimized memory controller IP cores and reference designs are included as part of the product deliverables along with VHDL source code and API for Windows and Linux operating systems.

The DATA-V5 is tightly integrated to the Host computer via an 8-lane PCI Express Platform connection supporting sustained bandwidths of up to 2.38GBytes/sec. Eight high speed serial I/O links via the PCI backplate allow multiple DATA-V5 cards to be interconnected via low latency point-to-point links operating at data rates of 3.125Gbps each. These deterministic datapaths are independent of the Host operating system and an ideal way of dramatically scaling applications.

The new VXS-620 FPGA and PowerPC VXS multiprocessor is designed to meet the signal processing needs of modern signal intelligence, software defined radio and radar applications. The VXS-620 is the latest product to be introduced to the highly successful Nallatech REVX Series of rugged embedded processing solutions.

The VXS-620 features an on-board Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA for the implementation of high performance DSP applications for sensor processing. The FPGA processing is supplemented by a PowerPC for standalone operation, communications management and user applications. Notably, the VXS-620 maximizes sensor I/O density with two PMC/XMC sites. These sites can support additional FPGAs, multiple channels of analog or digital I/O and additional network interfaces.

The VXS-620 sensor processing solution is also supported by comprehensive Development Kits available for both Linux and Wind River VxWorks. Nallatech Announces Availability of Latest Analog Data Capture and FPGA Processing PMC/XMC

Nallatech, a leading supplier of high-performance COTS FPGA processing solutions, today announced their latest PMC/XMC Analog Data Capture product offering. The new XMC-240 FPGA Analog Data Capture processing and analog input PMC/XMC mezzanine is designed to meet the signal processing needs of modern signal intelligence, software defined radio and radar applications. The XMC-240 is the latest product to be introduced to the highly successful Nallatech REVX Series of rugged embedded processing solutions.

The XMC-240 features four channels of analog input that can sample analog signals at up to 250 MSPS with 14 bits resolution. These are coupled directly to a Xilinx Virtex-5 SX95T FPGA for the implementation of high performance DSP applications to process the Analog Data Captured from the A/D converters. The XMC-240 has comprehensive clock management capabilities and offers either on-board clocking or external clock input.

The XMC-240 is also supported by comprehensive Development Kits available for both Linux and Wind River VxWorks. These include a Software Development Kit (SDK) with all necessary software drivers and libraries. They also include an FPGA Development Kit (FDK), with FPGA cores supplied to interface to FPGA peripherals including memories, data interfaces and analog interfaces.

Nallatech to Support and Deliver FPGA Product for Intel QuickPath Interconnect (QPI)

Intel QuickPath Interconnect – Nallatech is the first FPGA system vendor to work with Intel to use the Intel QuickPath interconnect for the development of socket filler solutions

Nallatech, the domain expert in high-performance FPGA computing solutions, today announced that it is the first FPGA system vendor to sign up to deploy product using the Intel® QuickPath interconnect. The Intel QuickPath interconnect is Intels new high-speed system interconnect for servers and high-end work stations. Nallatech will use the Intel QuickPath interconnect to bring to market the industrys first FPGA-based socket filler solutions based on this new technology for high performance computing applications.

The need for high bandwidth and low latency interconnections is growing rapidly as server deployed FPGA accelerated solutions become a reality. The Intel QuickPath interconnect creates a very high bandwidth, low latency and cache-coherent fabric between one or more multi-core CPUs. It will be used to connect microprocessors and Nallatech FPGA socket filler accelerators. This architecture reduces processing bottlenecks subsequently improving performance of a variety of high performance computing applications, including those in the financial and defense sectors.

We are delighted to reach this stage of collaboration with Intel. Future heterogeneous computing architectures are the advent of acceleration technologies said Craig Petrie, Product Manager at Nallatech. Intel is supporting this technology transition with the QuickPath interconnect and we are developing solutions to allow users to mix microprocessors and accelerators to address many diverse applications.

Moving to high-speed point-to-point interconnects is the next evolution in providing phenomenal bandwidth to processing cores and spreading memory across the system, said Lorie Wigle, director of technology initiatives and software strategy at Intel. Intel has worked with a number of different players in the ecosystem to ready the QuickPath architecture for deployment. Nallatech agreeing to distribute products emphasizes the broad industry support for the Intel QuickPath interconnect.
